A recent nationwide observational cohort study sheds light on using Impella and venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) in myocardial infarction-related cardiogenic shock (AMICS) and their associated outcomes, adverse events, and resource requirements. The study found that 20% of AMICS cases (n=4088) were treated with Impella and/or VA-ECMO. Notably, Impella patients exhibited lower in-hospital mortality (61% vs. 67%) and experienced fewer adverse events compared to VA-ECMO patients. Impella patients were more frequently discharged directly to their homes (20% vs. 11%) and had shorter hospital stays with lower costs.
