Implantable Loop Recorders Reveal High AF Incidence in Embolic Stroke Patients

A study evaluating patients with embolic stroke of undetermined source found that the incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) detected by implantable loop recorders was significantly higher than in patients with syncope or palpitations. Among 750 patients followed for a mean of 731 days, 48.6% of those with embolic stroke experienced any duration of AF compared to 13.8% in the non-embolic stroke group (P < 0.001). AF lasting ≥30 seconds was observed in 32.2% versus 12.4% (P < 0.001). The analysis showed increased AF incidence with durations up to 5.5 hours, indicating a bimodal distribution. Embolic stroke of an undetermined source was associated with nearly a fivefold increase in the hazard for detecting AF.
