Incidence and Long-Term Follow-up of Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices Among Orthotopic Heart Transplant Patients

This single-center study investigated cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) implantation after orthotopic heart transplantation using the bicaval anastomosis technique. The study, spanning from 1991 to 2017 and involving 399 adult heart transplant patients, aimed to assess the indications, patient characteristics, incidence, and survival related to CIED implantation. Results revealed that 8% of recipients received CIEDs, primarily for sinus node dysfunction or heart block, with a rare occurrence of early implantation. The risk of pacemaker implantation increased progressively during follow-up, and recipients with CIEDs exhibited longer post-transplant survival.
