The study systematically examined the occurrence and risk factors associated with surgical site infection (SSI) in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. The meta-analysis encompassed 32 articles involving 128,919 HNC patients, with 2949 cases of SSI reported. The overall SSI rate in HNC patients was 24%, ranging from 19% to 29%. Key risk factors identified through meta-analysis included BMI < 20 kg/m2, diabetes, ASA score, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, clindamycin antibiotic, deficit repair, neck dissection, blood transfusion, mandibular surgery, tracheostomy, prolonged operation time, and low serum albumin levels. These findings emphasize the importance of vigilance and preventive measures in managing SSI among HNC patients.
