Incidence of and risk factors for suspected and definitive glaucoma after bilateral congenital cataract surgery

A study examining 351 children who underwent bilateral congenital cataract (CC) removal reveals that 9.97% developed suspected or definitive glaucoma over a 5-year follow-up. Risk factors include microcornea, family history of CC, and initial anterior vitrectomy. Primary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is identified as a protective factor. Early detection of glaucoma post-CC surgery can mitigate blindness risk. The findings underscore the importance of vigilant monitoring and intervention, particularly for high-risk individuals, while suggesting the potential benefit of primary IOL implantation, pending further research validation.
