The study investigated the role of indoxyl sulfate (IS) in alveolar bone deterioration in chronic kidney disease (CKD). The results showed severe bone loss in CKD mice with periodontitis. IS accumulated in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of CKD mice and activated the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), inhibiting osteogenic differentiation and inducing mitochondrial changes. The AhR/SLC7A11/GPX4 signaling pathway promoted ferroptosis and alveolar bone resorption in CKD. Inhibition of AhR mitigated these effects.
