Infertility and Risk of Autism Spectrum Disorder in Children

This population-based cohort study assessed the link between infertility treatments and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children, accounting for infertility itself and mediating factors. Analyzing data from over 1.3 million births from 2006 to 2018, the study identified a slightly higher ASD risk in children born to individuals with infertility, with risks associated with subfertility, ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination, and in vitro fertilization. The impact was partially mediated by factors like cesarean birth, multifetal pregnancy, preterm birth, and neonatal morbidity. The study suggests exploring these factors to enhance neurodevelopment in children of individuals with infertility, regardless of fertility treatment.
