Influence of Residual Meniscus Volume on Tibiofemoral Joint Biomechanics after Discoid Lateral Meniscus Surgery

A recent study utilized finite element analysis to investigate the impact of varied residual meniscus volumes on tibiofemoral joint biomechanics post-discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) surgery. The knee joint model, derived from CT and MRI data, underwent meniscus resection, revealing noteworthy changes in shear and compressive stresses on the lateral meniscus and femur cartilage. Results indicated a crucial threshold of 55% meniscus volume preservation to prevent significant joint stress increase, emphasizing the importance of preserving the frontal volume of the DLM for enhanced knee biomechanics.
