Initiation Patterns of Disease-Modifying Therapies for Multiple Sclerosis Among US Adults and Children, 2001 Through 2020

A recent study examined the prescribing patterns of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for multiple sclerosis (MS) in the United States from 2001 to 2020. The findings revealed a significant decline in the use of platform injectables, primarily driven by a reduction in interferon β initiations. Infusion therapy initiations also increased modestly, particularly after the introduction of ocrelizumab. The study highlights the importance of shared decision-making between patients and clinicians in MS treatment, with factors such as convenience, advertising, and insurance restrictions potentially influencing prescribing patterns.
