Innervated Muscle Flap for Tongue Reconstruction Outcomes

Innervated Muscle Flap for Tongue Reconstruction Outcomes

This prospective pilot study evaluated the safety and functional outcomes of using a chimeric innervated vastus lateralis muscle and anterolateral thigh fasciocutaneous flap for tongue reconstruction in advanced tongue cancer. The intervention showed safe use with minimal complications and improved patient-rated intelligibility (p = 0.04). Despite the more extensive resections in the intervention group, functional outcomes like swallowing and speech remained similar, suggesting potential for refinement in technique for better outcomes.
