Intake and serum levels of micronutrients and chronic oral diseases burden

The study aimed to investigate the relationship between micronutrient intake, serum levels, and the burden of chronic oral diseases. The researchers analyzed data from two cross-sectional studies, NHANES III and NHANES 2011-2014, including a total of 12,865 participants. They examined the intake and serum levels of vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus, which were combined into a latent variable called Micronutrient intake. The outcome variable was the burden of chronic oral diseases, which included probing pocket depth, clinical attachment loss, furcation involvement, caries, and missing teeth. The study found that higher micronutrient intake and higher serum levels of vitamin D were associated with a lower burden of chronic oral diseases. Structural equation modeling revealed that micronutrient intake influenced the burden of chronic oral diseases through its effect on vitamin D serum levels. Furthermore, obesity was found to increase the burden of chronic oral diseases by reducing vitamin D serum levels. The findings suggest that promoting a healthy diet, along with adequate vitamin D levels, may help reduce the burden of chronic oral diseases and other non-communicable diseases like obesity.
