Intermittent vs. Continuous Energy Restriction in Adolescent Obesity

Intermittent vs. Continuous Energy Restriction in Adolescent Obesity

A 52-week trial compared intermittent (IER) and continuous energy restriction (CER) in adolescents with obesity and metabolic complications. Both groups achieved similar reductions in BMI z scores (−0.28) and BMI percentiles. Insulin resistance improved in both groups at 16 weeks but was sustained only in the CER group at 52 weeks. Minimal changes were observed in dyslipidemia and hepatic function. IER offers an alternative to CER, expanding options in behavioral weight management.
