Intestinal Microbiome Changes and Clinical Outcomes of Patients with Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis (UC), a chronic inflammatory condition, was treated in 20 patients through fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) using enemas. Administered daily for ten days with fecal microbiota from three donors, 95% of patients achieved clinical remission at week 8. Adverse events occurred in 5 patients. Analysis of gut microbiota revealed increased biodiversity post-FMT, reducing the proportion of potentially harmful bacteria. Though FMT proved effective, remission duration varied, potentially linked to patients' initial microbiota characteristics. Tailoring FMT based on pre-treatment microbiome analysis could enhance treatment efficacy.
