Intrapartum Antibiotic Use Linked to Ampicillin-Resistant Maternal Bacteremia

Maternal bacteremia, primarily caused by Enterobacteriaceae, is a significant risk. This study found that intrapartum ampicillin use increased the incidence of ampicillin-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in both mothers and neonates. The incidence of bacteremia decreased over the 11-year period, but preterm deliveries showed a higher rate of Enterobacteriaceae bacteremia and neonatal sepsis. These findings underscore the need for targeted infection control and antibiotic protocols in obstetric care to reduce maternal and neonatal risks.
