A pilot study on mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) reveals higher initial rates of post-concussion symptoms, state fatigue, and fatigability compared to minor orthopedic injuries. After three months, only the difference in post-concussion symptoms remains significant for the mTBI group. Improvement in symptoms correlates with cognitive reserve in the mTBI group. Functional connectivity changes in the brain and differences in recovery trajectory for fatigability are noted. The study suggests mTBI is associated with brain functional connectivity changes and persistent symptoms, particularly in those with lower cognitive reserve.
