Iron deficiency, pregnancy, and neonatal development

This review discusses the prevalence of anemia in pregnant women, with approximately 40% attributed to iron deficiency (ID). Iron plays a crucial role in erythropoiesis, immune responses, and fetal development during pregnancy. The review focuses on the impact of ID on placental development and iron uptake, fetal development and immunity, and maternal and infant susceptibility to infection. While there have been some research advancements, there is still a need for more human studies to understand iron regulation and its effects during pregnancy. Generating better evidence is vital to develop strategies for reducing ID incidence and improving maternal, neonatal, and infant health.
