Is the acne medication isotretinoin associated with poor mental health?

This study aimed to determine if people aged 12 to 27 years who had acne and took isotretinoin medication had poorer mental health than those who also had acne but did not take isotretinoin. Using an extensive database from the USA, we identified over 30,000 people taking isotretinoin for their acne and over 44,000 people who, instead of isotretinoin, were taking oral antibiotic medication. The study found that people who took isotretinoin medication had slightly better mental health than people who took oral antibiotic medicines for acne. This study, therefore, suggests that isotretinoin medication was unlikely to be causing poor mental health in these people.
