Obesity is a growing problem worldwide, and bariatric surgery (BS) is currently the most effective long-term weight-loss treatment for people with severe obesity. A recent study found that individuals who underwent BS had a lower risk of all-cause mortality than non-operated participants and reduced CVD, cancer, and diabetes-related mortality. However, there was an increase in mortality due to external causes, particularly suicide, with a higher risk in males and females aged 18-34. These findings are consistent with previous studies that reported increased mortality due to external causes, depression, and alcohol abuse in individuals who underwent BS.
