
The study compared the frequency of itching in frontotemporal lobar degeneration spectrum disorders (FTLD-SD) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and examined the neuroanatomical underpinnings of itching of undetermined origin (IUO). The study analyzed data and brain MRIs from 454 participants, including 137 with IUO and 317 without. Itching was more frequent in FTLD-SD (38%) compared to AD (18%), with the odds of itching being 2.4 times higher for FTLD-SD. Greater gray matter atrophy was found in patients with IUO in brain regions such as the amygdala, insula, precentral gyrus, cingulum, right frontal superior gyrus, and thalamus. In behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) patients with itching, right-lateralized gray matter atrophy was observed. Awareness of the link between neurodegeneration and itching can aid in managing itch in older adults.
