Kidney Microbiota May Play Role in Kidney Stone Formation

A study by Jose Agudelo and colleagues identified bacteria in mouse and human kidney samples, with higher density in the medulla and greater species richness in glomeruli. The findings suggest that antibiotic use may alter the kidney microbiota, leading to dysbiosis and the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria that could facilitate calcium oxalate (CaOx) kidney stone formation by altering the local chemical environment.
