Laboratory-Based Frailty Index Predicts Mortality and Organ Damage in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

A prospective cohort study developed the first laboratory-based frailty index (FI-Lab) to assess frailty in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Using routine laboratory variables from 283 patients, researchers found that individuals classified as frail had significantly higher risks of mortality and organ damage during follow-up. The FI-Lab remained a strong predictor even after adjustments and performed best when combined with an existing clinical frailty index. The findings suggest FI-Lab may serve as a practical screening tool for identifying high-risk SLE patients early.
