High plasma lactate levels are associated with increased mortality in critically injured patients, particularly those with severe burns. A recent study has uncovered that lactate, previously considered a waste product of glycolysis, actually acts as a potent inducer of white adipose tissue (WAT) browning. This response mediates post-burn cachexia, hepatic steatosis, and sustained hypermetabolism. The causal link between hyperlactatemia and browning in burn patients remains unknown. The study demonstrates that elevated lactate significantly promotes adverse outcomes after burn trauma by directly stimulating WAT browning.
