A new study conducted in Sweden has found that bariatric surgery, a weight loss procedure, can significantly increase life expectancy and reduce overall mortality. The results showed that the surgery group had a longer life expectancy compared to the control group, regardless of whether they had baseline type 2 diabetes or not. The surgery also reduced overall mortality and cardiovascular mortality in both groups. These findings suggest that bariatric surgery can be beneficial for improving health outcomes and extending lifespan, irrespective of diabetes status.
