Locoregional strategies to decrease postoperative pain and neck discomfort after open thyroidectomy: A scoping review

The study summarizes the evidence on locoregional interventions to reduce pain and discomfort after thyroidectomy, as current pain management practices can contribute to the opioid addiction crisis. The authors conducted a scoping review of 49 publications, including systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials, which involved 5045 patients. The findings suggest that pre-incisional infiltration of the surgical wound, bilateral superficial plexus nerve block, wound massage, and neck exercises can decrease postoperative pain and discomfort. Furthermore, topical administration of anesthetic before intubation can decrease sore throat frequency, while reducing the need for analgesics during and after thyroidectomy. The study concludes that locoregional interventions can significantly impact postoperative pain and reduce opioid use, thereby improving patient outcomes.
