Long-Term Study on Topical Atropine Eye Drops for Childhood Myopia Control Reveals Safety and Outcomes

A long-term study observing the Atropine for the Treatment of Myopia (ATOM) trials assessed the safety and outcomes of childhood myopia control using topical atropine eye drops. Examining 71 ATOM1 and 158 ATOM2 adult participants, results showed no significant differences in refractive errors 10 to 20 years after 2 to 4 years of atropine use (0.01% to 1.0%). The 1% atropine-treated group displayed no increased ocular complications compared to the placebo group. The findings may impact future clinical trial designs, emphasizing the need for further investigations into atropine concentration and duration for childhood myopia control.
