Long-term trends and urban–rural disparities in the physical growth of children and adolescents in China

This study analyzed data from five survey cycles (1985–2019) to examine height and BMI trends among 7, 12, and 18-year-olds in urban and rural areas. Results showed a general increase in height and BMI, with diminishing urban–rural disparities by 2019. Although urban children remained taller, the gap narrowed. BMI differences persisted, especially at higher percentiles. The findings highlight the need for targeted interventions, focusing on affordable healthy foods for rural areas and nuanced strategies to address the rising BMI trend in urban–rural settings.
