This prospective study evaluated cochlear implant (CI) users with unilateral hearing loss (UHL) or asymmetric hearing loss (AHL) to assess their long-term binaural hearing abilities. The study used masked speech recognition tasks with AzBio sentences and measured the ability to benefit from spatial release from masking (SRM). The results showed that both UHL and AHL participants demonstrated improved SRM with long-term CI use. UHL participants reached asymptotic performance early, while AHL participants showed continued growth in binaural abilities beyond 1 year. These findings suggest that CI can enhance binaural hearing abilities for individuals with UHL or AHL, and the time course of improvement may vary depending on factors like age at implantation and initial hearing thresholds.
