Although facial transplantation is considered adequate for restoring facial appearance, research on speech outcomes following surgery is limited. Therefore, more research is critically needed to inform patients of the expected rates and extent of recovery and develop interventions to improve speech outcomes. In addition, speech intelligibility, speaking speed, and lip strength were below normative values in the first 2 years of postsurgery. These findings motivate ongoing work to develop interventions for improving this population's motor speech function.
