A new study examined the impact of low birthweight and overweight during childhood and young adulthood on type 2 diabetes risk in men. Findings reveal that low birthweight and overweight at age 20 significantly increase the risk of early and late type 2 diabetes. Notably, being under the median birthweight followed by overweight at age 20 poses a sixfold increase in early type 2 diabetes risk, while a combination of low birthweight and overweight at age 20 raises the risk massively. The study underscores the importance of avoiding young adult overweight, particularly in boys with low birthweight, to mitigate type 2 diabetes risk.
