A secondary analysis of the ASPREE trial investigated the risks of low-dose aspirin in preventing ischemic stroke and causing intracranial bleeding among healthy older adults. Over 19,000 participants in Australia and the US were involved, with half receiving daily aspirin and the other half a placebo. The study spanned about 4.7 years. While aspirin did not significantly reduce ischemic stroke risk, it led to a notable increase in intracranial bleeding occurrences. Subdural, extradural, and subarachnoid bleeding incidents were higher in the aspirin group. The study highlights concerns about using aspirin for stroke prevention in older individuals due to increased bleeding risk.
