Low Uptake of Iron-Folic Acid Supplementation Among Pregnant Women

A cross-sectional study conducted in peri-urban Dodoma, Tanzania, only 35.6% of pregnant women reported routine uptake of iron-folic acid supplementation. Most began supplementation during the second trimester, with most obtaining supplements from antenatal care centers. Uptake was significantly higher among women in their third trimester (54.9%), those with over a five-year gap since their last pregnancy (40.6%), and those attending at least four antenatal care visits (73.7%). Additionally, routine uptake was associated with hemoglobin testing (AOR = 3.02) and frequency of antenatal care visits (AOR = 1.69). The study highlights the need for improved systems to ensure continuous access to prenatal iron-folic acid supplements to prevent maternal anemia and related adverse outcomes.
