
A study published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine examined patellofemoral joint (PFJ) contact forces in athletes who had undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and were cleared to return to sports (RTS). The study compared PFJ contact forces in the ACLR limb with those of the contralateral (opposite) limb and a control group. The study found that peak PFJ force was lower in the ACLR limbs compared to both the contralateral limbs and the control limbs. The knee flexion angle was also lower, and quadriceps force deficits were present in the ACLR limbs. These findings suggest that despite clearance to RTS, differences in PFJ contact forces persist after ACLR, indicating the need for improved rehabilitation strategies.
