In a recent study, researchers aimed to assess the effectiveness of MRI in diagnosing early inflammatory changes in periodontal and periapical lesions. This non-ionizing radiation-based imaging modality could provide valuable diagnostic insights. Of the 34 studies reviewed, 13 were included, showing promising results. MRI, a non-ionizing imaging method, demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity in identifying soft and hard tissue involvement in these conditions, aligning with cone beam CT (CBCT) findings. However, variations in MRI protocols and disease definitions require further investigation. This research suggests the potential of MRI as a diagnostic tool for periodontal and periapical diseases.
