A landmark pediatric TB study, the SHINE trial, has shown a 4-month treatment regimen to be as effective as the standard 6-month regimen for children with nonsevere, drug-susceptible TB. However, children have been left out of recent adult-focused studies on simplified, all-oral, shorter regimens for rifampicin-resistant/multidrug-resistant TB (RR/MDR-TB). Experts now advocate for tailored treatment based on disease severity and drug susceptibility testing with child-friendly formulations. Advocacy and funding for pediatric clinical trials are urged to address the treatment gap.
