Combining oral and topical antimicrobial treatment for male partners to women's bacterial vaginosis therapy significantly reduced recurrence rates within 12 weeks. In a randomized controlled trial of 150 couples, 35% of women in the partner-treatment group experienced recurrence, compared to 63% in the control group (P<0.001). No treatment for men was inferior. Adverse events in men included nausea, headache, and metallic taste.
