This study investigated the relationship between toxic metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic) and preterm birth (PTB), as well as the potential modifying effect of maternal plasma vitamin D concentrations. The study found that higher concentrations of lead and arsenic during pregnancy were associated with an increased risk of PTB and spontaneous PTB, and that women with insufficient vitamin D levels were more susceptible to the adverse effects of lead. However, the study's sample size was relatively small, and the authors suggest further testing of this hypothesis in other populations.
