This post hoc analysis identified the mediators between canagliflozin and renoprotection in patients at a high risk of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). The study analyzed 42 biomarkers and their association with renal outcomes. The results showed that changes in haematocrit, haemoglobin, red blood cell count, and urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) significantly mediated the risk reduction with canagliflozin. The combined effect of haematocrit and UACR accounted for 85% of the mediation. The study suggests that changes in these biomarkers may explain the renoprotective effects of canagliflozin in high-risk patients.
