Mendelian Randomization Study Reveals Surprising Effects of Adiposity on Gastrointestinal Health

This study investigated the causal associations between adiposity (measured by BMI and waist circumference) and gastrointestinal (GI) diseases using Mendelian randomization among over 400,000 UK Biobank participants, over 170,000 Finnish-descent participants, and numerous consortia participants of predominantly European ancestry. The results showed that high genetically predicted adiposity was causally associated with an increased risk of GI abnormalities, particularly hepatobiliary organs (liver, biliary tract, and gallbladder) that are functionally related to fat metabolism. The study suggests that reducing adiposity may have beneficial effects on the prevention of GI diseases, especially those related to fat metabolism.
