This article reviews the mental health disparities faced by transgender and gender diverse (TGD) children and adolescents, who experience more psychological distress than their cisgender, heterosexual peers and their cisgender, sexual minority peers. The review explores the potential reasons for these disparities using a minority stress framework and discusses factors that may increase or decrease TGD youth's vulnerability to psychological distress. The article also examines interventions, including gender-affirming medical care, that may help improve mental health in TGD youth. Finally, the article concludes with limitations of current research and suggestions for future research.
