A recent study conducted in India, known as the ICMR-INDIAB study, aimed to assess the prevalence of metabolic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) across different regions of the country. The study included a representative sample of individuals aged 20 and older from urban and rural areas of 31 states, union territories, and the National Capital Territory of India. The findings revealed alarming rates of NCDs, with an overall weighted prevalence of 11.4% for diabetes, 15.3% for prediabetes, 35.5% for hypertension, 28.6% for general obesity, 39.5% for abdominal obesity, and 81.2% for dyslipidemia. The study emphasizes the need for targeted policies and interventions to address the rising epidemic of metabolic NCDs in India, particularly in less developed states.
