Metabolism of periodontal pathobionts: Their regulatory roles in the dysbiotic microbiota

Periodontitis is caused by an imbalance in the microbiota in the gums and a disrupted host response. The metabolism of the subgingival microbiota plays a key role in shaping the microenvironment and affecting the host response. Dysbiotic plaque can develop due to metabolic interactions between pathobionts and commensals. The review explores the metabolic profiles of the subgingival microbiota, metabolic crosstalk, and interactions between microbes and the host.
