Metformin and Vildagliptin Reduce Hepatic Steatosis in T2D

Metformin and Vildagliptin Reduce Hepatic Steatosis in T2D

Hepatic steatosis (HS) risk is elevated in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) patients. This study compared the effects of vildagliptin and metformin on HS in 246 newly diagnosed T2D patients over six months using the Hepatic Steatosis Index (HSI) and ultrasound grading. Both groups showed significant reductions in fasting blood glucose (FBG), HbA1c, weight, BMI, HSI, and HS ultrasound grading (p < 0.001). Metformin demonstrated greater reductions in weight and BMI than vildagliptin (p = 0.001 and p = 0.009). However, HS improvements on ultrasound were comparable between groups. HSI correlated strongly with HbA1c, BMI, and lipid profile measures, with total cholesterol and LDL identified as key HS predictors. Both vildagliptin and metformin effectively reduced HS, with metformin showing a more pronounced impact on weight and BMI.
