Microscopic colitis and risk of incident rheumatoid arthritis

A recent study in Sweden found that patients with microscopic colitis (MC) are at an increased risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA) compared to the general population. The study, conducted over a 10-year period, revealed that 0.9% of MC patients and 0.5% of matched reference individuals were diagnosed with RA. This risk translated to approximately one additional RA case in 226 MC patients over the course of a decade. The study emphasized the importance of timely evaluation for RA in MC patients with joint symptoms or arthralgia to prevent delays in diagnosis.
