miR-98-5p Modulates Inflammation and Apoptosis in Osteoarthritis

The study investigates miR-98-5p's impact on osteoarthritis (OA), focusing on chondrocyte inflammation, apoptosis, and extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation. Lower miR-98-5p levels were found in OA tissues and IL-1β-treated cells. Increasing miR-98-5p reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines, apoptosis, and ECM degradation, while overexpression hindered IL-1β-induced effects. MiR-98-5p targeted CASP3 mRNA, influencing its expression. CASP3 knockdown mirrored miR-98-5p's effects, while overexpression negated them. The findings suggest miR-98-5p as a potential therapeutic target for OA by mitigating IL-1β-induced damage via CASP3 regulation.
