miR‐99a‐5p as a biomarker for lymph node metastasis prediction in oral squamous cell carcinoma patients

This study focused on distinguishing lymph node involvement in early-stage oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients without clinical signs of metastasis. By analyzing 798 miRNAs in tumor samples from 10 positive (pN+) and 10 negative (pN0) node patients, the study identified eight differentially expressed miRNAs. Notably, hsa-miR-99a-5p displayed high sensitivity and specificity in predicting positive lymph nodes. Further validation in a separate group of 15 pN+ and 24 pN0 patients through RT-qPCR supported these findings. These results suggest hsa-miR-99a-5p could serve as a potential biomarker for detecting lymph node metastasis in primary OSCC tumors, aiding in prognosis and therapy decisions.
