
A study has identified a key factor in the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a condition with high mortality rates. They found that mitochondrial uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) in lung venular capillaries plays a role in the failure of the lung's endothelial barrier, which leads to ARDS. This failure triggers a chain reaction, including oxidative signaling and neutrophil activation, resulting in liver congestion and potentially fatal multiple organ failure. Genetic inhibition of UCP2 prevented lung injury and liver congestion, suggesting it is a potential therapeutic target for ARDS. This discovery sheds light on the mechanisms behind ARDS and offers hope for future treatments.
