Mitochondrial Function Found to Influence Breast Cancer Risk

The study used Mendelian randomization (MR) to explore the causal relationship between mitochondrial function and breast cancer. Data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) identified specific mitochondrial genes linked to breast cancer risk. In European populations, genes such as 39S ribosomal protein L34 and pyruvate carboxylase were found to increase breast cancer risk, while cytochrome c oxidase subunit 8A and ADP-ribose pyrophosphatase acted as protective factors. In East Asian populations, ATP synthase subunit beta and pyruvate dehydrogenase were identified as risk factors, while 39S ribosomal protein L32 and ADP-ribose pyrophosphatase were protective. The study provides evidence of a causal relationship between mitochondrial function and breast cancer risk, warranting further investigation into the mechanisms behind these associations.
