A study investigated the relationship between changes in 24-hour movement behaviors and body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference during the transition from work to retirement. The study included 213 retiring public sector workers who wore accelerometers and kept daily logs before and after retirement. The results showed that an increase in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) compared to sleep, sedentary behavior (SED), and light physical activity (LPA) was associated with a decrease in BMI and waist circumference. Conversely, increasing sleep compared to SED, LPA, and MVPA was associated with an increase in BMI. Reallocating time from MVPA to SED or sleep led to higher BMI and waist circumference. These findings suggest that physical activity and sleep recommendations should consider life transitions like retirement.
