Modified painless photodynamic therapy for facial multiple actinic keratosis in China

Researchers conducted a study comparing traditional photodynamic therapy (C-PDT) for facial actinic keratosis (AK) with a modified painless PDT (M-PDT). In the trial involving 14 patients, M-PDT showed comparable efficacy to C-PDT in clearing lesions (91.6% vs. 89%) but notably outperformed C-PDT in Grade III lesions (86.5% vs. 72%). M-PDT achieved 100% clearance for Grade I lesions after two sessions, compared to C-PDT's three sessions. M-PDT significantly reduced pain during treatment, with no significant adverse reactions. Additionally, M-PDT improved skin ageing indicators and reduced discolouration, making it a promising, less painful alternative for AK treatment.
