Modified red light 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy versus low-dose isotretinoin therapy for acne vulgaris

This multicenter randomized clinical trial compares the efficacy and adverse effects of modified 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (M-PDT) and isotretinoin (ISO) for moderate to severe acne vulgaris. The M-PDT group, receiving up to 5 weekly sessions post comedone extraction, exhibits significantly higher overall effective rates at 1 month compared to the ISO group. However, ISO shows higher efficacy 1 month after treatment. M-PDT demonstrates a quicker onset of improvement and good tolerability, with skin-limited side effects, while ISO is associated with systemic side effects like hepatotoxicity.
